From repins on Pinterest, to people requesting purchases for remakes, this one of a kind podium was a huge hit! After gaining popularity at the We All Grow Summit NYC for Latina Bloggers, the podium has been in high demand in the last few weeks. The distressed look gives it an antique look but modern flare. At EH SOCIAL EVENTS that is simply what we do!

We create custom, one of a kind pieces for our clients, tailored to the theme and feel of the event, and not duplicated! But when, one request was made for additional bathroom storage, it was a DIY must do!

By no means is Erika a professional carpenter. Most of the time, she does not have the proper tools or materials and a minor injury (nothing a Band-Aid can’t cure) is always a guarantee, BUT somehow she makes it work.

For this project you will need the following:

3- Crates

1- 1/2″ piece of Plywood cut to the size of what will be the bottom of your shelve, podium, etc.

Our crates where purchased at AC Moore and the plywood was from our scrap pile. 🙂

You will also need:

4 – 1/4″ – 20 x 1″ Machine Screws with nuts & washers

4 – 1 1/2″ casters

24- 1/4″ screws

Wood Glue

Drill

1/4″ Drill Bit

Begin by removing all the labels off your crates. Don’t forget the glue dots. If you paint over those dots, you’ll be very disappointed.

Then, stain or paint all 3 crates and  plywood in the desired color of your choice. Our customer requested a white wash finish but we encourage you to get creative. Skies the limit!

Once the paint dried we continued by taking 2 of 3 crates and stacked them on top of each other. Now, no 2 crates are ever the same. When you stack them you will notice they don’t align perfectly on all 4 sides. We suggest aligning the visible side. In this case it was the opening side and for the podium it was the closed side. These 2 crates will be your top and middle shelves. Don’t forget to put wood glue in between the crates.

We LOVE Gorilla Wood Glue

Drill a 1/4″ hole on each side of the inside of your crates making sure the bit goes through both crates.  Then insert one machine screw, washer and nut in each hole.

Take the 3rd crate, add wood glue to what will be your bottom, and lay your plywood on top. The plywood acts as support for your casters. These crates are made of poor quality wood. If you attempt to screw the casters on the actual crate, you will crack the wood (NO Bueno!!!)

Flip it over, pre drill 4 holes in each inner corner and add 1/4″ screw to each pre-drilled hole. This secures the plywood to the crate.

You’re almost done!!!! Finally, stack the first 2 crates to the top of your 3rd one. Don’t forget the wood glue! Drill a 1/4″ hole on each side of the inside of your crates making sure the bit goes through both the middle and bottom crates; like you did with crate 1 and 2.  Then insert one machine screw, washer and nut in each hole.

Using wooden crates, some paint, and creativity, the DIY podium was uniquely created for that specific occasion. There were so many requests received, it was hard to keep up. Hopefully, these step by step instructions are helpful to create your own unique creation to use for your home or office decor!
