When you do good, you feel good! And that energy, the kind that makes you happy and excited, all at the same time, was felt throughout the room at the first ever Handbags of Hope Exchange – Beauty Showcase. It was truly a day of women supporting other women.

The event featured fun with a touch of badassery, from DJ TedSmooth mixing it up to some Girl Boss mingling. The signature cocktails, with names like I am Worthy, were flowing courtesy of Nuvo and the Cocktail Vixens stirring it up at the bar. Guests visited vendors, left encouraging messages on the beautiful Tree of Hope created by Erika for Harvest of Hope Ministries, while munching on passed hor d’ourves.

The keynote speaker Tiffany Pinero, author of Werk Your Wardrobe, gave an encouraging talk on growing up in a big Cuban family and finding her passion for fashion. She also sprinkled in some effective tips on taking your wardrobe to the next level, on a budget!

The panel discussion (moderated by yours truly) featured Isabel Bedoya, self-taught Instagram makeup sensation, Khuraira Musa, make-up mogul and creator of Khuraira Cosmetics, and celebrity hair stylist Jennifer Pina, owner of Hair and Makeup Lounge. The ladies gave the audience a lot of advice on following your dreams and rising above insecurities, bringing several attendees to tears with their motivational words. “You have to believe in yourself, have passion and value yourself. Listen to your inner voice,” stated Khuraira Musa.

But perhaps one of the most touching moments was when one of the women who has received help from Dress for Success shared how events such as these are so beneficial for our community.

Dress for Success received over 175 bags from the event filled with toiletries and goods for women in need, many of whom will be attending interviews and starting new lives on their own. Our guests outdid themselves, several of them starting their own handbag collections at work or school. Handbags of Hope received donations from Florida, Atlanta, and across the tri-state area from ladies who couldn’t make it, but still wanted to contribute.

The amazing swag bags and raffle prizes were the icing on the cake. Guests were gifted sponsored goodies from beauty brands such as Shea Moisture, Curl Keeper, and Miss Jessie’s, Phyto, Karma Organic, Eden Body Works, Aunt Jackie’s Coils and Curls, Reqwater, Venice Extensions NYC, and Fliips, just to name a few.
